Kingman Turquoise & 3D Skull Challenge Coin

  There are so many things that you can pair with brass, but I would say that Turquoise has to be one of the most "appropriate" pairings. I have wanted to do something with Turquoise for such a long time, and after doing some of my more recent inlays, figured "why not!"

  This Challenge Coin is made from 100% solid brass. For those familiar, this is the same body type as the "CUE" that I've done previously; so, much thicker/taller and a slightly smaller diameter than that of a standard Challenge Coin.

  The Clover side of this Coin has been DEEPLY engraved to allow for a proper inlay, while the opposing side was 3D engraved with my 3Leaf branded Skull; a piece of artwork that not only represents the brand, but a "getting the work done" when it's called for.

  After blasting the Clover side of the Coin, I put a nice thick inlay of coarse Turquoise (from Kingman, AZ) in it and poured a tall layer of clear resin to encapsulate the stone and hold it in place. The entire Coin was blackened, and then the Clover side was ground/sanded through a series of grits... all the way into the thousands... Honestly, the finish was so nice after just sanding it down, that I almost left it like that; but nah...

  I finished the 3D Skull by hand rubbing it to a distressed aesthetic, highlighting the high areas, and leaving the lower areas dark.

  Both sides were given a high polish, with extra attention being given to the Clover and ring. This was done using various compounds, bringing out a brightness of the stone and the different colors that it has to offer. In fact, the polish is so fine that it mirrors all that's around it!
