Steve "Heavy Barrel" and I met on Instagram back in 2020. At that time, he was solely working with wood, creating and engraving a multitude of items. He has since taken that creative skill and moved forward with various projects; one of them being "paperweights". Steve had begun casting and came up with his "Relic", a large tag that he cast in brass. He was cool enough to send me a few of those, as well as some custom cast paperweights that bore a resemblance of my logo.
Out of those three paperweights, I've already completed two, auctioned and sent off some time ago. It's been 3 years since I've worked on one, and this is the LAST!
Cast by Heavy Barrel of solid brass. The finger stalls are ever so slightly larger than the 1" industry standard. This piece came with a ton of overcast points on the logo, and an overall rough appearance... But, that's what makes this one even more unique.
I started by cleaning up the "3" and clover on the front face; I am by no means a carver, but I slowly ground away any extra casting, carved some details onto and around each, giving the logo a ton more character. Each of the "mortar joints" have been deepened by hand, and many of the details such as the "plaster", have been sharpened.
When working on the pieces previous to this, I pretty much left the finger stalls alone, or lightly touched them up. But these were pretty rough after the casting process. There wasn't much of a "fillet" (contouring) around the stalls, so I hand filed each one, adding not only a full contouring, but a bit of a border around them, separating the rough character of the faces from that of the stalls.
As with the rest of the piece, the outer borders and edges had a bunch of impressions and rough areas from casting. These were hand filed as well, slightly rounding over the edges, and also creating a clearly seen border from that of the faces. The filing also added a whole other level of character to this as I did it in such a way that it left fine file marks, and a very cool swirl pattern.
This paperweight was given a special wash, deeply blackened, and then hand rubbed to a distressed look. After setting in the Florida humidity, Odie's Oil was applied and allowed to set. Hope you enjoy!
